Urbanisation during the Mughal Period

Urbanisation During the Mughal Period:

During the 200 years of Mughal rule ,i.e from the 16th to the 18th centuries CE,the urbanization of India received further encouragement. This period witnessed the establishment of a stable center and a uniform provincial government. The relative peace and security that ensued, encouraged the growth of trade and commerce, which in turn encouraged the growth of urban centers . According to Akbar's census records , his empire had 120large cities and 3200 small (qasbas) , each controlling 100 to 1000 villages 

The main urban centers during the Mughal period were Agra, Delhi, Lahore,Multan,Thatta and Srinagar in the north ; Ahmadabad,Surat, Ujjain and Patna in the west; and Sonargoan, Hoogli,Patliputra ,Chitgaon (chittagong) and Murshidabad in the East .

The characteristic of Urbanization during the medieval period in India were as follows:

  • Firstly, the rate of Urbanization was slow due to unstable political conditions.
  • Secondly Only Fortress towns under the patronage of Chieftains and petty rulers could grow.
